National Theatre of Panama

Genaro Ruggieri · Panama City, Panama · 1908

The National Theatre forms part of the monumental civic ensemble of Panama City’s historic center. Its formal façade conceals an intimate horseshoe auditorium richly decorated with painting, gilding and ornamental plasterwork. Designed in an Italian academic tradition, the theater reflects the nation-building ambitions that accompanied Panama’s early years as an independent republic. Its scale and internal craftsmanship make it an important architectural counterpoint to the city’s later canal infrastructure and high-rise development.
