National Theatre of Iceland

Guðjón Samúelsson · Reykjavík, Iceland · 1950

Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the National Theatre of Iceland was completed and opened in 1950 as a major institution in Reykjavík’s emerging national cultural infrastructure. The building combines a monumental street presence with simplified geometric massing and a vertically emphasized entrance composition. Its heavy exterior and carefully controlled ceremonial interior reflect the transition from historicist civic architecture toward a more abstract mid-century language. As the home of Iceland’s national theatre company, it is both an architectural landmark and an important document of the country’s post-independence cultural ambitions.
