National Theatre of Costa Rica

Guillermo Reitz + Nicolás Chavarría · San José, Costa Rica · 1897

San José’s National Theatre is the country’s principal late-nineteenth-century civic monument. Its richly composed exterior and ceremonial interiors combine European academic traditions with the ambitions of Costa Rica’s coffee-era elite. A sequence of marble stairs, painted ceilings, gilded ornament and the horseshoe auditorium turns arrival into an explicitly theatrical procession. Beyond its decorative character, the building is significant as an early national investment in public culture and as a persistent urban anchor on Plaza de la Cultura.
