National Taichung Theater

Toyo Ito & Associates · Taichung, Taiwan · 2016

Toyo Ito’s National Taichung Theater is organized around a three-dimensional network of curved concrete surfaces that form rooms, circulation and structural enclosures without relying on conventional flat walls. The cave-like system produces changing spatial widths and unexpected connections between foyers, theatres and public areas. Externally, the rectilinear envelope is punctured by large hourglass-shaped openings that reveal the flowing interior geometry. Opened in 2016, the building is one of Ito’s most technically ambitious works and a major experiment in translating continuously curved digital geometry into large-scale concrete construction.
