National Palace of Culture

Rafael Pérez de León · Guatemala City, Guatemala · 1943

The National Palace is a monumental state complex organized around symmetrical wings, courtyards and richly decorated public interiors. Rafael Pérez de León combined colonial, neoclassical, Spanish Renaissance and Mudéjar references into an intentionally national eclectic language. Completed during the Ubico era, the building later shifted from executive administration toward cultural and ceremonial functions. Its green exterior, internal murals, arcades and grand salons make it one of Guatemala City’s most important examples of architecture used to construct an official national image.
