National Palace of Culture

Alexander Barov + design team · Sofia, Bulgaria · 1981

Sofia’s National Palace of Culture is a vast multipurpose complex created for major congresses, performances and exhibitions. A broad dark-clad central mass rises above a terraced podium and public plaza, with internal foyers, halls and circulation organized at megastructure scale. Alexander Barov led the design team for a project intended as a principal cultural monument of late socialist Bulgaria. Opened in 1981, the building remains one of Sofia’s largest public institutions and a major example of late-modern monumental architecture in which art, landscape, infrastructure and event spaces were conceived as one civic ensemble.
