National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka

Kisho Kurokawa · Suita, Japan · 1977

Kisho Kurokawa's museum is a large modular complex of dark, repetitive volumes arranged around courtyards within Expo '70 Commemorative Park. The architecture reflects his Metabolist background through aggregation and expandable systems rather than a singular monumental object. Long interior routes, bridges and open courts support an encyclopedic collection and make the building itself a study in institutional megastructure.
