National Museum of Korea
Junglim Architecture · Seoul, South Korea · 2004
The National Museum of Korea’s Yongsan building is a monumental linear complex organized around a broad central passage that frames views toward Namsan and the surrounding landscape. Junglim Architecture arranged permanent galleries, special exhibitions and public facilities in long parallel wings, using stone façades and large-scale voids to give the national collection an appropriately civic presence. The architecture was substantially completed in 2004 before the museum opened to the public at the new site in 2005. Its scale and axial organization make it one of Seoul’s principal contemporary cultural institutions.
