El Salvador's new national library places a substantial public learning institution in the historic centre of San Salvador. Opened in 2023, the building combines a highly visible contemporary envelope with several levels of reading, collection and shared activity spaces. The project was designed through Chinese-Salvadoran cooperation by a team from the Central-South Architectural Design Institute. Its architectural interest lies in the contrast between a large modern public programme and the historic civic buildings around the central square. Visiting: Public library access is free.
