National Gallery of Canada

Moshe Safdie · Ottawa, Canada · 1988

Moshe Safdie’s National Gallery is organized around a long glazed colonnade leading toward a crystalline Great Hall with framed views of Parliament Hill. Granite-clad gallery volumes provide controlled exhibition spaces, while glass circulation areas establish a strong relationship to Ottawa’s civic landscape. The building combines monumental axial planning with a late-twentieth-century language of geometric glass structures. Opened in 1988, it gave Canada’s national art collection a purpose-built architectural identity in direct dialogue with the capital’s principal institutions.
