National Gallery of Australia

Edwards Madigan Torzillo & Partners / Colin Madigan · Canberra, Australia · 1982

The National Gallery of Australia is a low monumental concrete complex designed around a triangular planning grid. Colin Madigan’s architecture uses heavy walls, coffered ceilings and controlled daylight to create a sequence of galleries connected to sculpture gardens and the broader parliamentary landscape. Construction was substantially complete in 1981 and the institution officially opened in 1982. The building forms a close architectural dialogue with the neighbouring High Court and is a major example of late Australian brutalism shaped specifically for museum circulation and display.
