National Arts Theatre Lagos
Technoexportstroy / Bulgarian design and construction team · Lagos, Nigeria · 1975
Lagos’s National Arts Theatre is an immense performance complex whose low, curved mass and flared upper volume give it a highly recognizable silhouette. Developed by a Bulgarian design and construction team, the building contains major auditoria, rehearsal and support spaces within a single monumental envelope. It was conceived as a centerpiece for Nigeria’s large-scale cultural ambitions in the 1970s and became closely associated with FESTAC ’77. Its architecture is a striking example of state-sponsored late modernism adapted to a major national arts institution.
