Narva Triumphal Arch

Vasily Stasov · Saint Petersburg, Russia · 1834

The Narva Triumphal Arch commemorates the Russian victory over Napoleonic France and was rebuilt in stone and metal by Vasily Stasov after an earlier temporary structure. A single monumental opening is framed by massive columns and topped by a bronze chariot group, giving the gateway a highly sculptural silhouette. Completed in 1834, the arch marked one of the principal approaches to imperial Saint Petersburg. Its later setting changed substantially with industrial and Soviet urban growth, but the monument remains a powerful example of nineteenth-century architecture used to construct state memory at metropolitan scale.
