Naples Cathedral
Unknown · Naples, Italy · 1314
Naples Cathedral is a dense architectural palimpsest at the heart of the old city. Although generally associated with Gothic origins, the cathedral incorporates earlier religious structures and later Baroque transformations, producing a building that cannot be reduced to a single style. Its chapels, nave, crypt, and decorative programs reflect the city’s long religious and political history, especially the cult of San Gennaro. Architecturally, the cathedral is valuable for showing how sacred buildings in Naples absorb time: ancient, medieval, and early modern layers coexist within one urban monument. Its location along Via Duomo also makes it a major orientation point in the historic street network.
