Nalanda Mahavihara
Gupta and later monastic builders · Nalanda, India
Nalanda's surviving brick monasteries and temple remains reveal the organization of a major Buddhist centre of learning. Repeated residential courts and larger sacred structures establish a legible relationship between study, community and worship. The archaeological site is best understood through its successive building phases rather than a single founding or completion date. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors.
