Nabeshima Shoto Park Toilet
Kengo Kuma · Tokyo, Japan · 2021
Nabeshima Shoto Park Toilet, designed by Kengo Kuma, is conceived as “A Walk in the Woods,” using small cedar-clad volumes connected through the park landscape. Rather than consolidating the restroom into a single object, Kuma disperses the program into a sequence of modest pavilions, creating a gentler relationship between public infrastructure and nature. The project reflects his broader architectural interest in material tactility, fragmentation, and the softening of boundaries between building and environment. Within THE TOKYO TOILET initiative, it is one of the clearest examples of a restroom treated as landscape architecture as much as building design. The use of wood, paths, and separated volumes makes the facility feel embedded in its setting, turning a practical amenity into a carefully composed park experience.
