Museum of the Portuguese Language
Paulo Mendes da Rocha; Pedro Mendes da Rocha · São Paulo, Brazil · 2006
The Museum of the Portuguese Language brings a contemporary cultural programme into São Paulo's historic Luz railway station. Paulo and Pedro Mendes da Rocha developed the original museum conversion, opened in 2006, while later restoration followed a major fire. The project connects language, migration and the everyday movement of people through a working transport landmark. Architecturally, its interest lies in the adaptation of an existing institutional shell to immersive exhibition use while preserving the identity of the station within the city. Visiting: The museum is ticketed, with free periods. The date refers to its conversion within the historic Luz Station.
