Museum of Islamic Art
I.M. Pei · Doha, Qatar · 2008
The Museum of Islamic Art, completed in 2008, is a prominent cultural institution in Doha, Qatar. Designed by I.M. Pei, the building's distinctive form is inspired by ancient Islamic architecture, particularly the ablution fountain of the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo. Its stepped layers and geometric masses reflect a minimalist interpretation of traditional Islamic design principles, creating a commanding presence on the Doha waterfront. The structure is characterized by its use of creamy limestone, which reflects the desert sun and enhances its sculptural quality. A dominant feature is the soaring, glass-paneled atrium, which provides expansive views of the Arabian Sea. The museum houses a comprehensive collection of Islamic art spanning 1,400 years, establishing itself as a significant center for the preservation and study of Islamic cultural heritage.
