Museum of Anthropology at UBC

Arthur Erickson · Vancouver, Canada · 1976

Arthur Erickson’s Museum of Anthropology is organized around a dramatic Great Hall whose concrete post-and-beam frame and expansive glazing open toward the Pacific Northwest landscape. The monumental structural rhythm was informed by, but does not literally copy, Indigenous post-and-beam building traditions. Galleries, storage and research spaces extend behind the public hall in a low campus complex. The current building opened in 1976 and became one of Erickson’s defining works, integrating museum display, landscape and an unusually expressive concrete structure.
