Museo Revoltella Renovation
Carlo Scarpa; Franco Vattolo and Giampaolo Bartoli (completion) · Trieste, Italy · 1991
The expansion and renovation of the Museo Revoltella in Trieste began with a 1963 scheme by Carlo Scarpa for the adjacent Palazzo Brunner and related museum spaces. Scarpa reorganized circulation, galleries, stairs and the roof terrace with his characteristic attention to thresholds, materials and framed views, but the project was not completed during his tenure. After interruptions, Franco Vattolo continued the work and Giampaolo Bartoli directed the final phase. The renovation was completed in 1991 and the museum reopened in 1992. The resulting complex therefore preserves Scarpa’s architectural conception while also reflecting a long, multi-architect execution history.
