Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte

Giovanni Antonio Medrano · Naples, Italy · 1757

The Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte is a former royal palace set within a large historic park above Naples. Designed as a Bourbon hunting lodge and royal residence, the building combines courtly architecture, collection display, and landscape planning. Its long façades and elevated position give it a commanding relationship to the city, while the surrounding bosco offers a different model of public space from Naples’ dense historic center. Today it houses major art collections, but its architectural importance also lies in the palace-park ensemble: access routes, views, gardens, and institutional reuse all contribute to the experience. It is a key site for understanding Naples beyond the waterfront and old town.
