Museo Anahuacalli
Juan O’Gorman · Mexico City, Mexico · 1964
Juan O’Gorman designed Anahuacalli for Diego Rivera as a museum for the artist’s extensive collection of pre-Columbian objects. Built from dark volcanic stone, the massive stepped composition deliberately evokes Mesoamerican monumentality without directly copying a specific historical building. Interior rooms are dense and atmospheric, connected by stairs and terraces that culminate in broad views across southern Mexico City. Opened in 1964, the museum is an unusual synthesis of modern program, volcanic landscape and O’Gorman’s search for a specifically Mexican architectural language.
