MUSEF XXI Extension
Carlos Villagómez · La Paz, Bolivia · 2004
The contemporary extension of Bolivia’s National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore expands a museum complex rooted in an eighteenth-century colonial house without simply imitating its historic fabric. Carlos Villagómez’s intervention adds new exhibition and circulation spaces to the dense center of La Paz while negotiating the scale and material presence of the existing monument. The project is valuable as a carefully considered encounter between contemporary Bolivian architecture, heritage and a major national ethnographic collection.
