Müller Villa
Adolf Loos + Karel Lhota · Prague, Czechia · 1930
Adolf Loos’s Müller Villa is a mature demonstration of the Raumplan: rooms are not arranged as repetitive floors but as interlocking volumes of different heights connected through short stairs and carefully framed views. The austere cubic exterior conceals richly finished interiors using marble, timber and built-in furniture. Designed with Karel Lhota and completed in 1930, the house makes sectional organization the core of domestic architecture. It stands in sharp contrast to both traditional villa planning and the more visually transparent modernism of Mies van der Rohe.
