MUDEC Museum
David Chipperfield Architects · Milan, Italy · 2015
MUDEC, the Museum of Cultures in Milan, was designed by David Chipperfield Architects as part of the redevelopment of a former industrial area in the Tortona district. Opened in 2015, the museum combines contemporary exhibition spaces with public urban functions and became a catalyst for the transformation of the surrounding neighborhood into one of Milan’s major design and cultural districts. The architecture is organized around a central irregular atrium illuminated from above, creating a fluid circulation system that contrasts with the more rational exterior composition. The building’s zinc facade and controlled geometric language reflect Chipperfield’s restrained architectural approach, while the interior spaces prioritize flexibility for temporary exhibitions and cultural events. MUDEC was conceived not only as a museum but also as a social and educational platform addressing themes of global culture, anthropology, and exchange. Today the project plays an important role during Milan Design Week and contributes significantly to the city’s contemporary cultural landscape.
