Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising
Jozef Lacko + Ladislav Kušnír + Ivan Slameň; engineers Arpád Tesár + Jozef Zvara · Bratislava, Slovakia · 1972
Most SNP crosses the Danube with an asymmetric cable-stayed structure supported by a single pylon on the Petržalka bank. The pylon is topped by a disk-shaped observation restaurant, giving the bridge a highly distinctive silhouette and turning infrastructure into an urban landmark. Opened in 1972, the project was technically ambitious but also controversial because its construction required major demolition within Bratislava’s historic fabric. The bridge remains an important example of late-modern Czechoslovak engineering in which circulation, structure and a public viewing program were combined into one monumental object.
