Mosque of Muhammad Ali
Yusuf Bushnaq; Pascal Coste (early scheme) · Cairo, Egypt · 1857
The mosque’s large central dome and tall minarets give it a commanding presence above Cairo’s Citadel. Its Ottoman-derived composition contrasts with many of the city’s earlier mosques, while the courtyards and elevated position connect the building to a wider view of historic Cairo. Visiting: Entry is via the ticketed Citadel; the domes and minarets are visible from much of Cairo. Located inside Cairo’s Citadel. Confirm the Citadel ticket, opening conditions and religious-visitor rules before entering; do not assume a free street-level visit.
