Moscow State University Main Building

Lev Rudnev + Sergei Chernyshev + Pavel Abrosimov + Alexander Khryakov · Moscow, Russia · 1953

The main building of Moscow State University is the largest and most symbolically charged of the Stalinist high-rises. A central tower with a monumental spire is flanked by lower academic and residential wings, creating an entire vertical campus on the Sparrow Hills. The project combines teaching, research, housing and ceremonial spaces within one enormous complex. Completed in 1953 under Lev Rudnev and a large design team, it represents the fusion of Soviet classicism, skyscraper technology and institutional megastructure at an exceptional scale.
