Monument to the Revolution

Carlos Obregón Santacilia; Émile Bénard (earlier palace structure) · Mexico City, Mexico · 1938

The Monument to the Revolution transforms part of an unfinished legislative palace into a major public memorial. Carlos Obregón Santacilia adapted the surviving structure, originally associated with Émile Bénard's palace project, into the monument inaugurated in 1938. Its large arches and dome dominate Plaza de la República, making the surrounding open space an essential part of its effect. The building demonstrates how an abandoned construction can acquire a new political and civic meaning through selective retention, structural adaptation and a different public programme. Visiting: The surrounding plaza is free. Observation-deck and museum experiences are ticketed.
