Monte Rosa Hut

ETH Zurich; Bearth & Deplazes · Zermatt, Switzerland · 2009

The contemporary Alpine hut uses a compact faceted envelope and integrated energy systems to respond to a remote mountain site. Its metallic exterior contrasts with the rock and snow around it. This is a mountain destination requiring a separate approach, rather than an ordinary urban architecture stop. Visiting: Overnight stays are paid and booked; the hut is reached only on a glacier hike and can be seen from the approach. Approach involves a glacier route from Rotenboden and several hours on foot. The hut operator requires suitable Alpine experience and equipment. Book accommodation and check seasonal access before planning a visit.
