MMCA Seoul
Mihn Hyun-jun / MPART Architects · Seoul, South Korea · 2013
MMCA Seoul is conceived as a low, porous museum district inserted between historic palace fabric, streets and former military buildings. Mihn Hyun-jun organizes galleries and public functions around a series of courtyards and open passages rather than one monumental object, allowing visitors to move between interior and exterior spaces at several points. New construction is deliberately fragmented in scale to respond to the sensitive urban context. Opened in 2013, the museum provides a major contemporary-art institution in central Seoul while treating permeability and urban continuity as central architectural concerns.
