Miyagi Museum of Art

Kunio Maekawa · Sendai, Japan · 1981

Kunio Maekawa's late museum combines exposed concrete, brick-red tile and deeply shaded arcades around a sequence of courtyards. Its monumental yet measured composition shows how the first generation of Japanese modernists evolved beyond direct Corbusian influence toward a heavier civic language.
