Mikimoto Ginza 2
Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects + Taisei Design · Tokyo, Japan · 2005
Mikimoto Ginza 2 is a compact jewelry flagship that turns a narrow Ginza plot into a structural and visual experiment. Toyo Ito designed the building as a pale, monolithic volume punctured by irregular openings that suggest petals, bubbles or the soft imagery of pearls. Behind this apparently simple surface is an advanced wall system that allows the interior to remain largely column-free, giving the small footprint a surprising openness. The façade rejects the conventional grid of retail architecture and instead creates a floating pattern that feels both playful and precise. As part of a Ginza walking route, it is an essential stop for understanding how contemporary Japanese architects use structure, skin and branding as one integrated architectural problem.
