Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama

Unknown · Panama City, Panama · 1796

The Metropolitan Cathedral anchors the principal square of Panama City’s Casco Antiguo. Constructed over more than a century, its broad stone façade is framed by two tall white towers while the interior follows a more restrained basilican organization. The building records the long colonial development of the relocated city after the destruction of Panamá Viejo. Its architectural significance lies in the combination of masonry monumentality, timber roof construction and the urban role of the cathedral as the dominant edge of Plaza de la Independencia.
