Metropol Parasol

J. MAYER H. und Partner · Seville, Spain · 2011

Metropol Parasol places a large timber canopy above a mixed civic programme in Seville's historic centre. Completed in 2011 by J. MAYER H., the interconnected mushroom-like forms shelter a market and public plaza while carrying an elevated walking route. Archaeological remains below the square are accommodated within the wider complex. The project is especially useful for examining how several urban layers can occupy one site: buried history, everyday trading, shaded public space and a panoramic roof. Its cellular timber structure produces a changing pattern of light and shadow at ground level. Visiting: The rooftop walkway is ticketed. Ground-level public space has different access conditions.
