Meenakshi Amman Temple

Pandya and Nayaka workshops · Madurai, India

Meenakshi's temple complex is woven into the urban structure of Madurai. Tall, densely sculpted gateway towers announce entrances to a layered sequence of courts, halls and shrines. Colour, stone columns and repeated thresholds make the movement from city streets towards the sacred centre a major part of the architectural experience. Visiting: A religious site. Basic access is normally free, with local worship, dress and photography restrictions; additional visitor attractions can be charged.
