Medici Chapels – New Sacristy

Michelangelo Buonarroti · Florence, Italy · 1534

Michelangelo takes Brunelleschi's adjacent Old Sacristy as a starting point and then destabilizes its classical vocabulary through compressed niches, oversized orders and deliberately tense wall articulation. Architecture and sculpture are conceived as one system around the Medici tombs, making the room one of the clearest demonstrations of Michelangelo's architectural language.
