Mattancherry Palace

Portuguese and later Dutch-period builders · Kochi, India · 1555

Mattancherry Palace uses a restrained exterior and a courtyard-based plan to accommodate a former royal residence. Timber roofs and the arrangement of interior rooms connect the building with Kerala's architectural traditions. The palace is particularly significant for the way its surviving murals remain embedded within the spaces for which they were made. Visiting: Entry is ticketed; the palace is closed on Fridays.
