Matsuya Ginza
Kida-gumi (1925); Matsuda Hirata Sekkei (renovations) · Tokyo, Japan · 1925
Matsuya Ginza is one of the district’s major department-store landmarks and an important part of Ginza’s commercial urban history. While the building has been altered and renewed over time, its long presence on Chuo-dori represents the department store as a civic-commercial anchor rather than only a shopping destination. Its luminous façade and large street frontage contribute to the visual continuity of Ginza’s main avenue, especially at night when the building becomes part of the district’s continuous band of light. Recent interior projects, including refined hospitality and lounge spaces, show how historic retail institutions keep adapting to contemporary visitors. For ArchiAtlas, Matsuya adds context and scale to the smaller boutique landmarks nearby.
