MVRDV's cultural center for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale lifts a bright volume above the ground and turns the underside into a playful public landscape. Its deliberately graphic surfaces and integration with art installations make it a rare example of early-2000s European experimental architecture embedded in rural Japan.
