Matenadaran
Mark Grigorian · Yerevan, Armenia · 1959
The Matenadaran is a monumental manuscript repository and research institute positioned at the upper end of Mashtots Avenue. Mark Grigorian uses dark basalt, a broad ceremonial stair and a strongly symmetrical façade to give the archive the gravity of a civic monument while integrating sculptural figures associated with Armenian intellectual history. Interior galleries and storage spaces support one of the world’s major manuscript collections. Opened in 1959, the building is an important example of Soviet Armenian architecture using local stone and historical symbolism within a fundamentally modern institutional composition.
