St. Mark's Church
Sigurd Lewerentz · Stockholm, Sweden · 1960
Sigurd Lewerentz’s St. Mark’s Church in Björkhagen is a seminal work of post-war sacred architecture. Completed in 1960, the complex uses dark brick, exposed structure and deliberately direct construction to create spaces of exceptional material intensity. Rather than relying on monumental symmetry, Lewerentz organizes the church as a low cluster around courtyards, with daylight and subtle changes in level shaping the experience. Its uncompromising brickwork and tactile interiors anticipated themes that became central to later brutalist and material-driven architecture.
