Market Hall Rotterdam
MVRDV · Rotterdam, Netherlands · 2014
Market Hall Rotterdam is a mixed-use residential and office building with an integrated market hall, notable for its arched form and vibrant interior artwork. Designed by MVRDV, the building's horseshoe-shaped structure encloses a large public space, demonstrating a novel approach to urban densification and public amenity integration. The arch contains 228 apartments and 24 penthouses, with window orientations focused on the exterior or the interior market space. The building's most striking feature is its enormous interior mural, titled "Cornucopia" by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, which covers the entire vaulted ceiling with oversized depictions of fruits, vegetables, insects, and flowers. This artwork transforms the market into a grand, immersive experience. Below, the market level hosts a variety of food stalls and restaurants, while a supermarket and underground parking facilities are located on the lower levels.
