Maritime Youth House

PLOT / BIG + JDS · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2004

The Maritime Youth House is an early PLOT project that merges a sailing club, youth facilities, and public outdoor space into one continuous wooden surface. Instead of separating building and playground, the project folds the ground plane into ramps, decks, and sheltered areas that support multiple uses at once. Its curved surface negotiates between contaminated soil, maritime activity, and informal youth culture, producing a low-cost but highly memorable civic landscape. The project is valuable because it shows the roots of BIG’s later approach: take a constraint, turn it into a diagram, and then use that diagram to create public generosity. It remains a useful precedent for adaptive, programmatically layered community architecture.
