Marina City

Bertrand Goldberg · Chicago, United States · 1964

Bertrand Goldberg’s Marina City brought housing, parking, offices, entertainment and marina functions into a dense mixed-use complex on the Chicago River. Two cylindrical concrete residential towers rise above spiral parking decks, with wedge-shaped apartments radiating around central cores. The forms deliberately reject the rectilinear language of contemporary Miesian Chicago. Completed in the mid-1960s, Marina City was an early effort to repopulate the downtown with residential life and remains one of the city’s most recognizable experiments in megastructure urbanism.
