Marin County Civic Center

Frank Lloyd Wright · San Rafael, United States · 1962

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Marin County Civic Center stretches across the California landscape as long horizontal administrative wings bridged over shallow valleys. Repeating arches, blue roofs and a golden tower give the complex a distinctive organic identity while internal corridors connect offices beneath continuous skylights. Wright designed the project late in life; the first major wing was completed after his death in 1962. The complex is significant for treating a large governmental program as landscape-scale architecture rather than a conventional centralized civic monument.
