Madinat al-Zahra Museum
Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos · Córdoba, Spain · 2009
Nieto Sobejano designed the museum at Madinat al-Zahra as a restrained intervention below the famous archaeological remains. Opened in 2009, the building is organized through a sequence of walls, courtyards and partly embedded spaces that respond to the idea of excavation without copying the historic palace-city. Controlled daylight and pale concrete give exhibition and research functions a clear contemporary setting. The museum has its own position near the visitor arrival area and should not be confused with the hilltop ruins. Its low profile allows the wider archaeological landscape to retain visual priority. Visiting: Admission exemptions depend on residency or nationality. The museum and archaeological ruins are separate locations within the visitor itinerary.
