Lycée Schorge Secondary School
Diébédo Francis Kéré · Koudougou, Burkina Faso · 2016
Lycée Schorge Secondary School in Koudougou is an important development in Francis Kéré’s educational architecture. The project organizes classrooms around a shaded courtyard and uses locally informed construction strategies to address heat, light, ventilation, and social gathering. Its brick modules, protective screens, and generous roof overhangs create a school environment that is both robust and atmospheric. The building’s architecture is significant because it treats education as a spatial and civic experience rather than merely a set of rooms. Shaded circulation areas become social spaces, and the courtyard provides a collective center for students. The project also continues Kéré’s broader commitment to local labor, material intelligence, and climate-responsive design in Burkina Faso. For ArchiAtlas, Lycée Schorge is essential because it shows how contemporary African architecture can be experimental, beautiful, and practical at the same time. It advances a model of public architecture grounded in dignity, comfort, and community participation. It should be reviewed on site as architecture, urban artifact, and cultural evidence rather than as a tourist attraction alone, because its importance comes from the relationship between form, use, construction, memory, and public life.
