Lviv Opera House
Zygmunt Gorgolewski · Lviv, Ukraine · 1900
Zygmunt Gorgolewski’s Lviv Opera House closes the northern end of Prospekt Svobody with a monumental neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque composition. The building was constructed over the covered Poltva River, allowing the theatre to occupy a highly prominent central site. An elaborate sculptural façade leads to ceremonial stairs, richly decorated foyers and a traditional horseshoe auditorium. Opened in 1900, the opera house reflects Lviv’s position within the Austro-Hungarian cultural sphere while remaining one of the city’s strongest architectural symbols and most important performance spaces.
