Luis Barragán House and Studio
Luis Barragán · Mexico City, Mexico · 1948
Barragán’s own house and studio is a restrained urban exterior containing an extraordinarily controlled sequence of color, light, texture and garden views. Thick walls, small openings toward the street and carefully framed interior vistas create a deliberate sense of privacy, while the garden dissolves the boundary between architecture and vegetation. Completed in 1948, the house became the clearest built expression of Barragán’s mature synthesis of modern architecture, Mexican spatial traditions and highly emotional use of material and color.
